We will explain the price increases and environmental measures planned by delivery companies in 2025.

We will explain the price increases and environmental measures planned by delivery companies in 2025.

1. Price increases shift from “exception” to “assumption”

In 2025, delivery companies successively revised their rates. Yamato Transport revised its declared rates for sizes 120 to 200 (with a revision rate of approximately 3.5%) from October 1, 2025. While small sizes remained unchanged, large sizes were subject to notable revisions. Japan Post also revised its rates in October 2024, affecting both businesses and individuals. (Yamato Holdings, L News, Post Office | Japan Post Co., Ltd.)

2. The “People, Fuel, and Systems” Behind Price Hikes

In addition to rising fuel and equipment costs, efforts to improve drivers' working conditions (such as the implementation of overtime regulations following the so-called “2024 issue”) continue. This is not merely a matter of price but should be understood as a structural transformation aimed at ensuring stable operations and safety. Sagawa Express also cited increased energy and labor costs as reasons for past revisions, reflecting a common trend across the industry. (Sagawa Express Co., Ltd. )

3. “Environmental measures = cost” is not the only factor

Environmental investments such as EV adoption, renewable energy, joint delivery, and modal shift may be a burden in the short term, but in the medium to long term, they directly contribute to improved delivery efficiency, reduced accidents and malfunctions, and enhanced brand value. Yamato aims to introduce approximately 23,500 EVs by 2030 and reduce GHG emissions by 48% (compared to the 2020 fiscal year). (Monoist, Truck News)

4. Government Policy and “Decarbonized Logistics”

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) aims to reduce GHG emissions in the transportation sector by 35% by fiscal year 2030 compared to fiscal year 2013, promoting the adoption of next-generation vehicles, smoother traffic flow, and modal shifts. Expanding logistics DX and joint transportation is also an effort to “reduce costs while improving quality.” (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism)

5. Five Things EC Operators Can Do “Starting Today”

  1. Review packaging to lower size categories (especially the 80–100 and 120–140 ranges)
  2. Formalize delivery policies: Clearly state same-day/next-day delivery, drop-off, and redelivery rules on the website
  3. Redesign pricing plans: Offer free shipping for orders above a certain amount, and optimize by region and size
  4. Implement multi-carrier logistics: Use carriers with strengths in specific cargo types
  5. Make environmental initiatives visible: Communicate the use of EV delivery and shared transportation to customers (This will increase acceptance of price increases)
